The Journey of Karate

Where Karate Began

Karate started on the island of Okinawa, Japan. It began as a method of self-defense when weapons were banned. Local people developed fighting techniques using their hands and feet. These techniques mixed with Chinese martial arts to create early karate.

Important Founders

Gichin Funakoshi brought karate to mainland Japan in the 1920s. He is called the "father of modern karate". Chojun Miyagi created Goju-Ryu style. Kenwa Mabuni founded Shito-Ryu style. These masters helped spread karate worldwide.

Modern Karate

After World War II, karate spread globally. It became popular as both self-defense and sport. In 2020, karate debuted in the Olympics. Today, there are four main styles practiced worldwide: Shotokan, Goju-Ryu, Shito-Ryu, and Wado-Ryu.

The Way of Karate (Karate-do)

Karate-do means "the way of karate". It's not just fighting - it's about self-improvement. Training develops discipline, respect, and confidence. The belt system shows progress from white (beginner) to black (expert). True mastery takes a lifetime of practice.
